This wedding season, everything old is new again. Wedding touches that have been off the radar for ages are suddenly experiencing a come-back in modern weddings and becoming part of show-stopping and sentimental moments.
The use of white doves at weddings can be traced back to ancient Greek and Roman times when doves were gifted from the bride to the groom as a symbol of love, devotion, and caring. An old wedding superstition suggests that if you see a pair of doves on your wedding day, you’ll have a long and happy marriage since doves mate for life.
I’ve seen both a “hand release” (where the bride and groom each hold and then release a dove at the same time) and a “flurry” or “flock release” (where the bride and groom release two birds that are followed by the release of a larger group of doves) at weddings. The symbolism and history make this an extra sentimental and memorable option.
Who doesn’t stop and take notice when a cool, old car drives by? A vintage car is also a major head-turner at weddings. As a backdrop for photos and a getaway option, you really can’t beat the vintage feel these cars bring to your day. Some brides and grooms choose an old car with sentimental value: the same year, make, and model of the car the bride’s parents drove away from their wedding in; a classic car owned by the groom’s grandfather; a car the bride and groom bought and restored together.
The first wedding cake recipe was published in 1655, so wedding cakes definitely “take the cake” when it comes to wedding desserts. But cake hasn’t always taken center-stage at wedding receptions. From mints to petit fours to cookies to pie, some brides and grooms have opted to switch up the sweet treat on their day.
Smores bars, ice cream trucks, and build-your-own dessert bars have increased in popularity over the last several years. But one trend we see emerging, especially among Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte lovers, are macaron towers! These elegant treats have been prominently featured in both shows and were once reserved for royalty only. Macarons add a touch of class and elegance to a wedding. Delicate and bite-sized, they’re a perfect sweet to enjoy as you head back to the dance floor to enjoy the party!
